A buzz was in the air last night as Harrogate’s top luxury hotel launched its much-anticipated new restaurant in a stunning looking setting which turned out to be former shipping containers.

The Mackaness family, who first bought Rudding Park 52 years ago, welcomed a wide range of guests to the preview evening of FIFTY TWO, a bold new approach to eating out offering an ‘immersive dining experience’ under the direction of acclaimed chef Adam Degg.

Located just a few short yards from the luxury resort’s kitchen garden which boasts 52 raised beds, hence the restaurant’s name, as the champagne flowed, the gathering was given the first look at the stylish and light and airy interiors of the building made up of five shipping containers – and what dishes to expect now that bookings have officially gone live.

Addressing the crowd, owner Simon Mackaness’s sons Matthew and Nick Mackaness outlined the concept and the hard work which had gone into turning an exciting idea into reality in the space of nine months.

In an increasingly competitive world in the high-end sector of hotels, Matthew Mackaness told guests that standing still for independently-owned hotels such as Rudding Park was not an option.

Nick Mackaness said the key to the successful launch of FIFTY TWO was collaboration between all the various teams at the resort set in 300 acres of landscaped gardens and woodland.

And he singled out the expert staff at the kitchen garden which was to play a major role in the new restaurant’s menu.

FIFTY TWO will be offering dinner only with a blind menu with just five tables with social seatings offering prime views of the action as the chef’s team conjur up a series of delicious dishes from the seven metre kitchen island.

Talking to the Harrogate Advertiser, Adam Degg, who has worked with multi-Michelin starred chefs including Tom Kerridge and is well-known from this year’s BBC TV Great British Menu, said he was looking to create the feel of a relaxed dinner party at home with great food and drink, great company and great conversation.
